Door Step School is a registered non-governmental organization working to promote education and impart literacy skills among socially, and economically disadvantaged children in more than 50 urban slum communities in Mumbai and in Pune. Through direct intervention in communities and corporation schools in both cities, the organization reaches out to more than 1,20,000 children by taking education to every "Doorstep". Door Step School began work in 1988 when it was realized that school needed to be taken to the children who could not reach it. In attempting to follow up on and bring back to school those children who were on roll at theColaba Municipal School but had dropped out, it became more and more apparent that the need was to go beyond this exercise and instead take education to the children.Today, thirty odd years down the line, a mix of ‘push out' and ‘pull out' factors still result in a large number of children remaining out of school. The government of India stipulates that primary education is free and compulsory for all children up to the age of 14 years. In spite of providing the infrastructure and a wide network of government-run municipal schools for children coming from the poorest section of our society, the numbersattending primary schools still fall short of expectations. Studies also show that 22% children in Std V do not know how to read and write, and an alarming rate of 57% children drop out of school between class III and VII.Strategic Objectives• To provide facilities for improving literacy skills of children between age group of 3 to 14 years (School goingand non school going) in the areas considered under the project.• To address the problems faced by our public school system viz., non-enrolment, wastage, stagnation andlow quality of learning for the children enrolled.• To provide all these services at flexible timings and at suitable locations- be it in slums/pavements/streets.• To work towards overall development of children
