The Kidz Positive Foundation, an extension of the Kidz Positive Beadwork Project, benefits both the parents and families of households living with HIV positive children, providing a safe and creative space with essential stimulation for children of participating bead working mothers. In addition to the extra burden of taking care of an HIV child, the parents frequently face challenges of poor education, single parenthood, poverty, mental and physical ill-health, stigma and social isolation. As a consequence, these parents are unlikely to have access to those resources needed to promote the necessary early childhood development (ECD) of their children. Without the proper inputs, the children struggle to reach age appropriate milestones and start school – if indeed they even attend school - ill-equipped, because they do not have the basic foundational developmental skills. Their failure at school will significantly reduce their potential to develop into healthy, resilient young adults, thus perpetuate the poverty cycle into which they were born. The aims and goals of the programme were severely disrupted by COVID-19. The beadwork project, like everything else, went into lockdown. Orders from all over the world, which provided the mothers with a stable weekly income, were suddenly all cancelled. Deprived of their once regular weekly income, the mothers as well as their families and dependants were left in dire straits- with no means of income.However, the resources of the Foundation enabled us to provide emergency relief in the form of weekly food vouchers, redeemable at the mothers' local supermarkets.
